John Moore, who directed 2008′s (frankly godawful) Max Payne is directing, so it’s hard to get too excited but hey – it’s Bruce Willis playing John McClane again, what could go wrong?

Details on the plot are pretty sparse but what is known is that it will be set in Russia and will involve McClane’s son, John McClane Jr. No details yet on who will be playing McClane Jr.

Rumours about this have been floating around since the start of the year – but it’s just been confirmed that Spanish actor Javier Bardem is to play the villain in the next James Bond film.

Speaking in an interview on ABC TV (skip to 04:40), the 42 year-old actor who won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as psychopathic assassin Chigurh in No Country For Old Men confirmed his involvement in the film saying “I’m very excited because my parents took me to watch the movies and I saw all of them, so to play that is going to be fun.”

Unsurprisingly, Bardem gave little away about his character, saying only “They chose me to play this man, but I cannot give you many details.”

Bond 23 (which is rumoured to be titled Skyfall) will be the third Bond outing for Daniel Craig who’s involvement in the 49 year old film franchise has drawn critical acclaim and seen the highest box office takings in the series’ history.

American Beauty director Sam Mendes has signed on to direct the film which is due for release on October 26th 2012.

Personally I think this is great news – not only is Bardem a great actor (perhaps one of the best working today) but he’s also an actor with real physical presence, something the Bond franchise has really been missing in recent years.

Let’s be honest – it’s been a long time since Bond had an adversary that was his physical match. In nearly 50 years we’ve gone from Sean Connery battling Robert Shaw’s Red Grant on a train (in surely one of the most iconic fight scenes in cinema history) to Daniel Craig slapping around a Frenchman in a luxury hotel. With Daniel Craig, the producers took Bond back to basics, it’s time they did the same with the bad guys.

Let’s just hope the screenwriters can deliver the goods and develop a character that doesn’t waste Bardem’s talents!

http://www.thepulpaholic.blogspot.com/

Everybody knows that even highly skilled stormtroopers have problems hitting their target with their helmets on. It must be a nightmare to go into battle with the knowledge that even if you empty your blaster rifle at close range there is a good chance that you didn’t hit the target even once. For the average stormtrooper this makes for a quite frustrating experience. If they manage to survive the battle.

In any case, this new model takes a different approach. Instead of fitting the helmet with the usual gadgets like automatic polarizing and anti-flash blinding lenses, MFTAS, a comlink and other nonsense that didn’t work half the time, the Empire went for a complete redesign. So now if they can’t shoot their enemies, then maybe this new helmet will at least distract them long enough for the troopers to throw a couple of thermal detonators their way.
Maybe he could also add some singing, like in a musical. He would probably call it something like dressical. The movie would totally tank at the box office and there would be no sequels.

When I was young, which is several decades ago, I felt the urgent need to import a games console. I had to import it because Nintendo, SEGA and other hardware manufacturers just didn’t see a market in the backwards country I was living in (and still am, my life is going nowhere). Of course, only weeks after I bought my first console they officially sold consoles everywhere. For half what I paid.

However, I went for a SEGA Megadrive (the Genesis in the US, for all the spambots visiting and feeling the need to break out of their master’s code and wanting to leave a relevant comment). So I got my imported and overpriced Megadrive and hooked it up to the TV only to find out that the TV signal wasn’t compatible and that I could only play the games in black and white. That was worth my saved money for sure. All this 16bit glory and I felt like I was living in the 50s.

As a result I started hating SEGA. It was all their bloody fault. Surely not mine. I only got the Megadrive because I couldn’t afford the console that I really wanted, the PC Engine (NEC Turbo Grafx 16 in the US). In my opinion, it was the better console with cooler games (R-Type, Splatterhouse, Alien Crush).

Little did I know that it really was an 8bit console with a 16bit architecture graphics chip. Meh, semantics. By watching the video below you probably wouldn’t say that either. Like you know. Or care.

To answer this rhetorical question in the most journalistic way possible: YES.

Proof: posted to the ugc video sharing site youtube on 19th February 2009.

In internet terms this is, in fact, a very old hat. Or old cheese. Runny, old cheese.

Well, so much for our journalistic integrity on reporting just the facts. Of course we have to post this. It’s (yet another) Star Wars related video. And this is what this site, the safe haven for embedded Star Wars nerdism, is all about.

So without further ado, please do applaud these true heroes of our time for their bravery in, er, science. Or something like that. There’s a Tesla coil, so it must be something to do with science. Possibly.

Power! Unlimited power!

Ok, I know. I have to stop posting Watchmen videos here. However, all of you should be applauding me. For quite a while now I haven’t posted anything Star Wars related. And that is an achievement in itself.

I have been obsessing over the Watchmen movie instead. And rightfully so. It is only half as bad as I expected it to be. It is rather good. You know, even with the replaced octopus monster and half of the <del datetime="2009-03-11T15:38:51+00:00">comic</del> graphic novel not being in it and all.

And I’m actually not so sure anymore that you have to stay so true to the original source <del datetime="2009-03-11T15:38:51+00:00">comic</del> graphic novel and have Dr. Manhattan’s blue schlong in almost every scene. It should have been safely stashed away in some pants instead. Much better than to have a giant blue penis dangling around on the screen. Especially on the IMAX version. That is, of course, unless they would have changed Dr. Manhattan into a blue, hot chick. Purely for plot reasons.

While I am still sitting here waiting for lazy Jon to write up a review for it, have a look at masked superheroes through the ages in the opening credits for the movie set to the sound of that old geezer Bob Dylan.

Ah, fake nostalgia. What a bastard you are.
